KINGSTON, R.I. -- Xavier Munford had 14 points and seven rebounds as Rhode Island defeated UNC Asheville 73-56 Monday night in the consolation round of the NIT Season Tip-Off tournament.
Minnis Biggie scored 14 off the bench for the Rams (5-2) and Biruta Gilvydas added 13.
Jaron Lane and Andrew Rowsey scored 17 apiece for UNC Asheville (1-5).
The teams were tied 33 at the half as UNC Asheville shot 50 percent from the field including 4-of-9 from 3. The Rams used a 20-11 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a 53-42 lead. The Rams led by double-digits the rest of the game, building a 21-point lead at one point.
The Rams held UNC Asheville to 39 percent shooting in the second half and outrebounded the Bulldogs 37-21 for the game. Rhode Island's reserves also helped, outscoring the Bulldogs bench 29-10.
