HAMDEN, Conn. -- Zaid Hearst scored a career high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Quinnipiac beat Iona 86-74 on Monday night.
Hearst was 9-of-11 shooting for Quinnipiac (8-5, 3-1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) and Ike Azotam added 18 and 15 rebounds. It was Hearst's sixth double-double of the season and Azotam's second straight game with at least 15 boards.
A.J. English scored 27 points, making 9 of 16 shots, and Sean Armand, David Laury added 10 apiece for Iona (6-7, 3-1). The Gaels pulled within 10 with 2:44 left in the game as Quinnipiac only made one field goal in the final nine minutes. Quinnipiac did make 7 of 8 free throws in the final 2:04 to seal it.
Quinnipiac hit its first eight shots of the game, jumped to a 49-27 lead and were never really threatened. The Bobcats outrebounded Iona 50-27. Kasim Chandler and Umar Shannon added 12 each.
