Fairfield holds off Quinnipiac 56-52 in OT.
HAMDEN, Conn. -- Marcus Gilbert hit a deep 3-pointer to send the game into overtime and finished with 11 points to help Fairfield beat in-state rival Quinnipiac 56-52 on Sunday.
Steve Johnston led Fairfield (4-5, 2-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) with 14 points and Mike Kirkland Jr. had 13. Kirkland, Gilbert and Johnston scored all 10 of Fairfield's overtime points.
Zaid Hearst led Quinnipiac (3-4, 0-2) with 20 points and Ousmane Drame had 12.
Hearst made 1 of 2 free throws with 22 seconds left in regulation for a 46-43 Quinnipiac lead. Then Gilbert hit his game-tying 3-pointer from the wing with 2 seconds left.
Quinnipiac only made one field goal in the first 12 minutes of the game, but trailed just 15-5. Gilbert's three-point play gave Fairfield a 14-point lead late in the first half, but Quinnipiac scored the final six to pull within 26-18 at halftime.
