Monmouth takes lead in MAAC, beats Canisius 73-68
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Justin Robinson and Andrew Nicholas scored 14 each and Monmouth became the last unbeaten team in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference beating Canisius 73-68 on Friday night.
Monmouth (6-7, 3-0 MAAC) took the lead for good with a 9-0 run to go up 59-55 with 4:24 left. The Hawks extended to 67-60 on Austin Tilghman's free throws with 49 seconds left. Tilghman made four more free throws and Andrew Nichols added a layup to secure the win.
Zach Lewis set career highs with eight 3-pointers and 31 points for the Griffins (7-5, 2-1). Lewis was 8 for 17 from distance and 11 for 23 overall.
Tilghman and Deon Jones added 11 points each for Monmouth.
Canisius led most of the second half with its largest lead at 49-41 with 12:39 left. One of Lewis' 3s made it 55-50 with 6:54 left before the Hawks took control.
