Monmouth holds off Fairfield from the line, 60-59
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. -- Deon Jones hit the second of two free throws with two seconds left to play, giving Monmouth a four-point lead, 60-56 lead. It turned out to be the winning shot as K.J. Rose hit a three-quarter court, two-handed launch to pull Fairfield within one at the buzzer, 60-59 Friday night.
Marcus Gilbert hit a pair of free throws that pulled Fairfield even, 47-47, with 4:00 left to play, but Monmouth answered when Justin Robinson converted the first of his eight straight free throws.
Robinson's second pair from the line gave Monmouth a five-point lead and his third set made it 55-49. His fourth pair, with :11 left, made it 59-54.
Jones finished with 18 points to lead Monmouth (12-10, 8-3 Metro Atlantic). Zac Tillman added 14 and Robinson 12.
Gilbert's 15 points led Fairfield (6-15, 4-7). Tyler Nelson added 13 and Amadou Sidibe added 10.
