Haws leads BYU over Long Beach State, 95-90
PROVO, Utah -- Tyler Haws scored 21 points and four other BYU players reached double figures Friday night in a 95-90 victory over Long Beach State in the season opener for both teams.
BYU trailed 47-46 at halftime before Nate Austin hit a 3-pointer, sparking a 10-4 run to open the second half. Long Beach State tied it at 66 with Deontae North's free throw with 9:40 to play, but Chase Fischer answered with a 3 and the Cougars led the rest of the way.
Skyler Halford had 18 points and a career-best seven assists, and Chase Fischer scored a career-high 17 with four 3-pointers for the Cougars. Fischer's 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining pushed BYU's lead to nine.
Mike Caffey scored 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting and McKay LaSalle and North added 16 to lead Long Beach State.
