Duren helps Yale hold off Sacred Heart 70-64
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Javier Duren scored 22 points, Justin Sears had 16 to reach a milestone and Yale held on to defeat Sacred Heart 70-64 on Tuesday.
Matt Townsend added 12 points for the Bulldogs (10-4), who reached 10 non-league wins for just the third time since the Ivy League was formed in 1956-57. Sears surpassed 1,000 points, the first underclassman to do that since 1990-91.
Steve Glowiak hit five 3-pointers for 15 points and De'Von Barnett scored 14 to lead Sacred Heart (6-7), which lost its third straight.
The Pioneers trailed by 15 points with about 13 minutes to go before a 12-4 run. They got within one but a three-point play by Duren at 3:02 steadied Yale and then Sears and Duren hit their free throws down the stretch.
Yale hit 11 of 13 free throws in the second half to off-set 51 percent shooting from the field for Sacred Heart.
