EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Andrew Smeathers scored a career-best 22 points to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 71-61 win over St. Francis (NY) on Saturday.
Smeathers did it with 6-of-7 shooting from the floor -- all 3-pointers -- and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. Gregory Graves added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Mountaineers (6-9, 2-2 Northeast Conference). Chris Martin had 10 points.
The Mountaineers broke open a close first half with a pair of 3s by Graves and another by Smeathers to lead 34-24 with 2:51 left in the period. They had a 36-30 advantage at the break.
St. Francis (NY) came back in the second half to within one, 47-46, on a Tyreek Jewell 3-pointer with 10:40 left to play. The Mountaineers answered with a 16-8 run to take a 63-54 lead with 3:17 remaining and never looked back.
Jalen Cannon led the Terriers (9-8, 3-1) with 19 points and 13 rebounds.
