Riverside holds off Fullerton in OT, 84-78
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- Steven Thornton and Taylor Johns combined for 46 points and took over scoring in the extra period as Cal-Riverside held off Cal State Fullerton, 84-78 in overtime in the Big West Conference opener for both teams Thursday night.
Johns scored six of his 29 points and Thornton scored six of his career-high 17 points in overtime as the Highlanders seized control, taking a 79-72 lead with :26 left in the game.
Lanerryl Johnson's layup with 1:36 left in regulation gave Fullerton a 67-64 lead, but Johns hit the first of two from the line and Nick Grunninger converted a pair of free throws with 10 seconds left to force overtime.
Riverside (8-7, 1-0 Big West) shot 28 of 67 from the field, but knocked down 9 of 22 shots from distance.
Johnson finished with 29 points and Alex Harris added another 25 to lead Fullerton (8-8, 0-1).
