Norfolk State tops Texas Southern 76-66
NORFOLK, Va. -- Malik Thomas scored 20 points and D'Shon Taylor added 19, both career-highs, to lead Norfolk State past Texas Southern 76-66 on Saturday.
Thomas, a graduate transfer from Boston University, bested his previous high of 19 points, which he set in Norfolk State's loss to his old school on Wednesday, and pulled down 10 rebounds.
A jumper by LaTre'e Russell gave Norfolk State (2-2) a 9-7 lead and the Spartans never trailed again.
Texas Southern (0-4) tied it at 49 when Chris Thomas made a layup with 13:23 left but, 9 seconds later Kievyn Lila-St. Rose hit a 3-pointer that sparked a 19-6 Norfolk State run.
The Tigers would get no closer than nine the rest of the way.
Jamel Fuentes tied a career-high with 11 assists, including four during the decisive run.
Chris Thomas scored a career-high 28 for Texas Southern.
RaShid Gaston had 14 points for Norfolk State.
