South Carolina State Bulldogs @ Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks
Stephens, Mortimer lead SC State past UMES in OT
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- Edward Stephens scored seven of his 26 points in overtime, including a deep, leaning 3-pointer with 2 seconds, to lead South Carolina State to a 73-72 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore on Monday.
Greg Mortimer added a career-high 21 points for South Carolina State (6-14, 4-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).
Stephens made 2 of 3 free throws to pull the Bulldogs within two with 1:58 left in overtime and, after a UMES (10-10, 3-2) turnover, Darryl Palmer's putback of a Stephens miss tied it at 70 with 1:18 to go.
Devon Walker missed a 3 for the Hawks, but Mike Myers grabbed the offensive rebound. He was fouled as he made a layup, but couldn't convert the three-point play with 37 second remaining.
South Carolina State burned some clock before Stephens hit the winner.
The Bulldogs went scoreless for nearly 9 minutes and UMES opened a 59-48 lead with 7 minutes left, but Stephens scored seven during a 16-5 run to close regulation.
