Hampton Pirates @ Howard Bison
Chievous gives Hampton 68-67 win over Howard
WASHINGTON -- Quinton Chievous' layup with seven seconds remaining lifted Hampton to a 68-67 victory over Howard on Saturday night.
Trailing 67-61 with 33 seconds to go, Deron Powers made a jump shot then a 3-pointer to get the Pirates within a point with 18 seconds left. Howard's James Carlton, who had been 7 of 8 from the line, was fouled but missed both free throws. Chievous got the rebound and scored the winning basket.
The Pirates (12-15, 8-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) defeated the Bison (15-14, 9-6) for the 11th straight time, including a 73-69 overtime victory at Hampton on Feb. 9.
Deron Powers made four 3-pointers and scored 23 points and added five assists for the Pirates. Chievous finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double this season. Dwight Meikle also had 10 rebounds.
James Daniel scored 20 points, Carlton 17 and Jared Norsworthy 10 for Howard.
