Green Bay knocks off Florida Gulf Coast 59-45
ESTERO, Fla. -- Keifer Sykes scored 19 points and Greg Mays added 12 with 10 rebounds as Green Bay won the Gulf Coast Showcase championship, defeating tournament-host Florida Gulf Coast 59-45 on Wednesday night.
Green Bay (4-1) stormed out to an early 15-0 lead as Sykes hit two jumpers and Jordan Fouse nailed a 3-pointer. FGCU (5-1) shook off a cold start and fought back to trail by only six at half. Sykes hit a jumper and layup to push Green Bay's lead back to 15 with 8:25 left.
The Phoenix shot 45.1 percent from the field and out-rebounded FGCU 41-33.
Sykes dished out five assists and grabbed five boards. He was named MVP of the tournament after scoring 20 points against Evansville and 12 against East Carolina.
The Eagles were limited to a season-low 27.3-percent shooting. Bernard Thompson scored 14 points and Brett Comer chipped in 10 for FGCU.
