Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks vs Hampton Pirates
Hampton upsets UMES in MEAC tourney 76-71
NORFOLK, Va. -- Deron Powers led four in double figures with 23 points and sixth-seeded Hampton upset third-seeded Maryland-Eastern Shore 76-71 on Thursday to advance in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.
Hampton (14-17) will face second-seeded Norfolk State (20-12) in the semifinals on Friday. Reginald Johnson scored 15 points with nine rebounds, Jervon Pressley had 12 points and Brian Darden added 11.
Hampton led by eight with 3:31 to go, but UMES' Ishaq Pitt made a pair of layups and a jumper and the Hawks drew to within one at 72-71 with 48 seconds left.
But Pitt missed a pair from the line and after Powers hit two free throws, Pitt missed a layup and fouled Johnson on the rebound. Johnson made 1 of 2, but Darden collected the rebound off the miss and Hampton held on.
Pitt led UMES (18-14) with 19 points and Mark Blackmon added 14.
