VCU rolls over American University 72-44
RICHMOND, Va. -- Justin Tillman posted a double-double scoring 10 points with 14 rebounds to help VCU roll over American University 72-44 on Wednesday night.
Melvin Johnson had 13 points and three assists for the Rams (3-2). Korey Billbury added 12 points and eight rebounds. The team averaged just 39.3 percent shooting from the field overall but had 16 steals, forced 22 turnovers and had a 42-29 rebounding edge over the Eagles (0-4).
VCU climbed to a 28-9 lead on a Tillman dunk with 5:02 to go in the first period and the Rams led 36-20 at the break.
Johnson and Michael Gilmore hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half and Billbury sank a jumper with 8:45 remaining to make it 54-31 and the Rams cruised to the win.
Jesse Reed led the Eagles with 12 points and five rebounds.
