Eastern Kentucky keeps Southern Utah winless with 98-85 win
RICHMOND, Ky. -- JaVontae Hawkins scored 20 points and Jarelle Reischel added 19 as Eastern Kentucky defeated Southern Utah 98-85 on Saturday.
Nick Mayo chipped in 18 for Eastern Kentucky (6-1). The Colonels' three-leading scorers each had six rebounds.
Eastern Kentucky never trailed. The game was the last of a five-game homestand. EKU will play its next four on the road.
Leading 19-17, K.J. Bluford hit four-straight 3-pointers in two minutes to give the Colonels a double-digit lead it would hold most of the game against Southern Utah (0-5). Bluford finished with 14 points.
Leading 42-33 at the half, the Colonels pulled ahead by 13 on a Mayo jumper for a 55-42 lead.
Eastern Kentucky shot 58.3 percent from the field, going 35 for 60. The Colonels were 11 for 22 from behind the 3-point arc.
Trey Kennedy led the Thunderbirds with 20 points and Travon Langston added 15.
