UC Irvine beats Long Beach St with strong 2nd half, 90-67
IRVINE, Calif. -- Luke Nelson hit six 3-pointers and scored 25 points to lead UC Irvine to a 90-67 win over Long Beach State on Wednesday night.
The win for UC Irvine (21-8, 10-3) breaks a tie between the two schools for second place in the Big West conference standings. The Anteaters still trail Hawaii by 1.5 games with three left to play.
Mamadou Ndiaye added 20 points and nine rebounds for UC Irvine, while Alex Young hit three 3s and finished with 11 points. Overall the Anteaters hit 12 of 20 from long distance and shot a very efficient 64.2 percent overall.
Justin Bibbins led the 49ers (15-13, 9-4) with 26 points. Travis Hammonds added 18 for Long Beach State, which had its six-game win streak snapped.
After a close first half, UC Irvine pulled away in the second, outscoring the 49ers 32-15 over a nine-minute stretch midway through to seal it.
