Late free throw helps Delaware top Fairleigh Dickinson 73-72
NEWARK, Del. -- Kory Holden had 21 points, and Cazmon Hayes made one of three free throws with 0.9 second left to help Delaware edge past Fairleigh Dickinson 73-72 on Tuesday night.
Hayes, who finished with eight points and four steals, had missed all six of his 3-point attempts for Delaware (2-1) when he was fouled by Marques Townes with less than a second remaining.
After missing his first and second free throws, Hayes sank the third to give the Blue Hens a win in their home opener.
Both teams struggled from the free-throw line, with Delaware hitting on 17 of 34 attempts and a 12-of-21 night for Fairleigh Dickinson (1-4).
Stephan Jiggets had 22 points for Farleigh Dickinson, and Earl Potts Jr. had 21 to go with nine rebounds. Jiggets made two free throws with 9 seconds left to tie the game at 72.
