Cal Poly holds off UC Riverside in 86-78 win
RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- David Nwaba scored 21 points, Reese Morgan added 17 more and Cal Poly held off UC Riverside for an 86-78 win Saturday night.
Ridge Shipley contributed 12 points for Cal Poly (9-15, 3-8 Big West), Jaylen Shead had 11 and Joel Awich 10. The Mustangs hit 47 percent from the field and went 23 for 29 from the line to snap a five-game skid.
Cal Poly broke it open early in the second half with an 18-4 run capped by Morgan's 3-pointer to make it 58-41 with 13:42 to play.
Riverside (13-14, 4-7) chipped away, cutting the deficit to 73-70 on a pair of free throws from Malik Thames with 2:04 left. Morgan sank a pair of free throws at the other end to spark a 6-2 spurt and Riverside got no closer than five the rest of the way.
Taylor Johns led Riverside with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
