UMBC beats Northern Colorado 81-72 behind Joyce
GREELEY, Colo. -- Cody Joyce scored a career-high 30 points on 11-of-14 shooting and UMBC beat Northern Colorado 81-72 on Saturday, breaking a three-game losing streak at the Maui Jim Maui Regional Games.
Rodney Elliott scored 16 and Joe Sherburne added 10 on 3-of-6 shooting from long distance for the Retrievers (1-3).
UMBC led 32-30 at halftime and pulled ahead on a 14-8 run in which Elliot scored eight while the Bears were scoreless for more than four minutes. Joyce's layup with 3:03 left put UMBC up by 14 and the Retrievers held on.
The lead flip-flopped until Cameron Michael tied it at 27 with a layup and then hit a 3-pointer for a 30-29 Northern Colorado lead. Joyce made a layup and Sherburne a free throw and the Retrievers led by two at the break.
Michael led the Bears (1-2) with 22, shooting 4 of 7 3-pointers. Jordan Wilson scored 14 and Anthony Johnson added 10.
