BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Kurt Steidl scored 17 points and Vermont beat Maryland-Baltimore County 79-72 on Sunday.
Steidl was 5 of 9 from the field and the Catamounts (12-9, 4-2 America East) shot over 58 percent as a team, including 9 of 21 on 3-point attempts. Ethan O'Day scored 14 points, Ernie Duncan had 13 points with seven assists, and Dre Wills added 11 points with 10 boards and six assists.
UMBC (5-16, 1-5 America East) was led by Jairus Lyles with a career-high 32 points on 11-of-20 shooting. He was 5 of 7 beyond the arc with five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Rodney Elliot added 13 points.
UMBC led 66-63 with 4:40 to go, but Steidl drilled a 3-pointer to spark a 10-1 run and six-point lead for Vermont. Lyles hit a 3 with 1:16 left to trim UMBC's deficit to three, but Cam Ward responded with a 3-point play and Steidl made a pair from the line.
