McLean scores 23, leads Quinnipiac past Fairfield 64-59
FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Giovanni McLean hit five 3-pointers and scored 25 points, both career highs, to lead Quinnipiac to a 64-59 win over Fairfield on Monday night.
Donovan Smith added nine points and a career-best 10 rebounds for Quinnipiac.
Fairfield (12-10, 6-6 Metro-Atlantic Athletic Conference) missed five straight field-goal attempts and went scoreless for more than four minutes and Quinnipiac (7-13, 4-7) used an 11-0 run to go up 56-49 with six minutes to play.
The Stags responded by scoring six straight, trimming their deficit to one with 3:46 left before McLean hit a 3 to make it 59-55.
Two free throws by Marcus Gilbert pulled Fairfield within two, 61-59, with a minute remaining, but McLean hit 3 of 4 foul shots in the final 35 seconds to cap the scoring.
Tyler Nelson scored 13 and Gilbert added 11 points for Fairfield, which came in averaging 79.9 points per game, tops in the Metro-Atlantic.
