VALPARAISO, Ind. -- Tevonn Walker scored 17 points and Shane Hammink added a career-best 16 as Valparaiso led from start to finish defeating Iona 83-58 on Sunday.
Walker scored 4 quick points as the Crusaders jumped out 8-0 and forced Iona to call its first timeout just 3:38 into the game. Valparaiso (2-0) opened on an 18-2 run, and led by as many as 27 points.
Walker made 5 of 8 shots and was 6 for 6 at the foul line. Hammink sank 4 of 6 field goals and went 6 of 8 from the line. The Crusaders blocked nine shots -- Vashil Hernandez swatted away seven.
Deyshonee Much -- who was allowed to play after gaining a last-minute waiver from the NCAA -- scored 12 points for the Gaels (0-1) as did A.J. English. Much, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, played for Buffalo in the 2013-14 season and enrolled at Iona last January.
