Hampton sneaks by Coppin State, 74-71
BALTIMORE -- Reginald Johnson Jr. scored 22 points, Quinton Chievous added 21 and 10 rebounds, and Hampton beat Coppin State 74-71 in overtime in the MEAC Conference opener for both teams on Saturday.
Coppin State scored the first four points of the overtime period to take a 71-67 lead. But the Pirates (4-3, 1-0 MEAC) rallied, closing the game on a 7-0 run to take the lead and the game.
Kalin Fisher scored six of the seven points, hitting two free throws then drilling a 3-pointer with 2:26 left to give Hampton a 72-71 lead. Chievous hit a free throw, pushing the lead to two, and Fisher hit one as well to close the game out.
Fisher finished with 13 points.
Josh Treadwell led Coppin State (2-5, 0-1) with 22 points. Trevan Seymore added 15 for the Eagles, who finished with four turnovers and two missed free throws in the final 2: 43.
