Grand Canyon beats Hampton, 63-51, for 1st 5-game win streak
PHOENIX -- DeWayne Russell scored 14 points and Joshua Braun added 13 as Grand Canyon topped Hampton, 63-51, and won its fifth straight game for the first time under coach Dan Majerle Monday night.
The Antelopes matched the previous streak with a win over Mississippi Valley State last week.
Reginald Johnson got to the rim for a layup with 4 seconds left to cut the 'Lopes lead to just three at the half, 28-25, but Grand Canyon went on a 15-6 run to start the second half and take a 43-31 lead.
Matt Jackson had 10 points off the Antelopes bench and Grand Canyon shot 42.1 percent from the floor (24 of 57), including 3 of 8 from beyond the arc.
Johnson led the Pirates (2-3) with 15 points. Lawrence Cooks added 13 as Hampton connected on just 18 of 53 field goal attempts (34 percent), 4 of 19 from distance.
