Samford holds on to beat VMI, 73-67
HOMEWOOD, Ala. -- Wyatt Walker scored 14 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and Samford held off VMI 73-67 on Saturday.
Darius Jones-Gibson and Jamal Shabazz each scored 13 points and Christen Cunningham had 11 for Samford (13-17, 4-13 Southern Conference), which snapped a three game losing streak. The Bulldogs had previously lost nine of their last 10.
Samford shot 54 percent from the field and had 14 total assists on 28 made field goals.
QJ Peterson hit five 3-pointers and scored 33 points for VMI (7-19, 2-13).
Samford never trailed in the second half and opened up a 54-39 lead on a Walker layup with 12:59 to go. VMI chipped away however, cutting its deficit down to 69-67 after a Peterson 3-point play with 1:36 left.
But a 3-pointer by Iman Johnson followed by a Cunningham free throw pushed the Bulldogs lead back to six and iced the game.
