Sam Houston St. beats Nicholls 60-59 with last-second layup
KATY, Texas -- Dakarai Henderson scored the winning layup with less than a second left and Sam Houston State beat Nicholls State 60-59 in the second round of the Southland Conference tournament Thursday night.
Henderson's basket capped an electric, three-basket sequence that proceeded with no stoppage of play. It started with Aurimas Majauskas's jumper that gave the Bearkats a 58-56 lead with 15 seconds left. T.J. Carpenter answered with deep 3-pointer that put the No. 7 seed Colonels ahead 59-58 with 5.9 seconds left. Henderson then went coast-to-coast, finishing high off the glass.
The third-seeded Bearkats (18-14) will face No. 2 seed Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in Friday night's semifinals.
Majauskas scored 16, Torry Butler added 12 with 10 rebounds and Jamal Williams had 10 points for Sam Houston State.
Quinton Thomas scored 10 for the Colonels (11-23), who took their first lead in over 24 minutes when Tre O'Neal's two free throws made it 54-53 with 2:06 left.
