Lyles 24 point night paces UMBC to win over Delaware St
CANTONSVILLE, Md. -- Jairus Lyles hit four 3-pointers and scored 24 points as UMBC cruised to a 90-68 win over Delaware State on Wednesday night.
The Retrievers (3-0) have won three straight to open the season.
Lyles made nine of his 14 shots and pulled down seven rebounds. K.J. Maura hit three 3s and finished with 19 points and six assists for UMBC, who were 10-of-21 shooting from long range. Nolan Gerrity added 13 points and 10 boards for the Retrievers.
UMBC used a 25-6 scoring stretch that turned an 18-17 lead into a 43-23 advantage at the break. Gerrity started the outburst with a layup, followed by a Lyles 3-pointer and Maura's layup.
Delaware State (1-2) never seriously threatened in the second half.
DeAndre Haywood scored 20 points to lead the Hornets. DeVaughn Mallory had 13 points.
