Hawthorne with 24, UT Martin beats NAIA Brescia 108-79
MARTIN, Tenn. -- Derek Hawthorne Jr. scored a career-high 24 points with 10 rebounds and UT Martin beat Brescia University of the NAIA 108-79 on Saturday night.
Hawthorne was 10 of 14 from the field including three from distance for the Skyhawks (4-4). Fatodd Lewis added 23 points with nine rebounds, Charles Henderson Jr. had 12 points and Quintin Dove 10.
UT Martin shot 59 percent from the floor compared to 40.5 percent for Brescia and had a 49-25 rebounding edge.
The Skyhawks took their time early but a layup and a dunk by Hawthorne gave them a 37-33 lead with 7:33 to play in the first and they led the rest of the way, building to a 58-40 advantage at the break.
A Hewitt dunk early in the second half stretched the Skyhawks' lead to 72-52 with 14:31 to play and they led by double figures the rest of the way.
Kayode Daboiku led the Bearcats with 12 points. Noah Cunningham added 11.
