Urbina struggles in debut, gives up four runs

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Ugueth Urbina turned an easy game into a

tough one for Billy Wagner and the Philadelphia Phillies.

Pat Burrell homered twice and drove in four runs, helping the

Phillies overcome Urbina's shaky debut to complete a three-game

sweep of the Texas Rangers with a 10-8 victory on Thursday night.

Todd Pratt homered and had four RBI and Jim Thome also

connected for the Phillies, who held on for their 12th win in 14

games. Philadelphia is a season-best five games over .500 at 33-28.

Urbina, acquired from Detroit on Wednesday, allowed four runs

and retired just one batter in the ninth.

"I've seen him pitch a lot. He's going to help us," Phillies

manager Charlie Manuel said. "The long plane flight, his first

time in a different uniform in a different city, there's a lot of

factors that go into that."

Mark Teixeira hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs. David

Dellucci also homered for Texas, which was swept for the first time

this season. The Rangers have lost six of eight after winning nine

straight.

"They swing the bats well. That's a real good ballclub,"

Rangers manager Buck Showalter said. "They will have a lot of fun

this year."

Vicente Padilla (3-5) allowed four runs and four hits in five

innings to win his second straight start. Wagner earned his 17th

save in 19 chances after replacing Urbina.

Urbina gave up a two-run homer to Mark DeRosa in the ninth, then

pinch-hitter Gary Matthews Jr. singled and Dellucci walked. Wagner

entered and got Michael Young to fly out, but Teixeira's two-run

double made it 10-8 before Hank Blalock grounded to first to end

the game.

"I'm sure he wanted to go out and impress everybody," Wagner

said of Urbina. "That's a good-hitting, free-swinging team. They

swing at everything and hit everything."

Pedro Astacio (2-7) gave up five runs and seven hits in four

innings.

Burrell hit his second homer deep into the left-field seats to

give the Phillies a 7-4 lead in the fifth against reliever Michael

Tejera. Bobby Abreu was hit by a pitch -- a possible retaliation for

Padilla hitting Teixeira in the top of the inning -- before Burrell

homered. Burrell responded by slamming his bat down and uttering a

few choice words, before beginning his jog around the bases.

"I don't like when games come down to hitting guys," Burrell

said. "I was frustrated with that. I was upset."

Burrell's first shot came leading off the second, cutting the

deficit to 3-1. Thome followed with a drive that reached the second

deck in right-center field for just his fourth homer this season.

After David Bell singled, Pratt hit a 2-0 pitch into the

left-field seats to give the Phillies a 4-3 lead.

Pratt's RBI single in the fourth put Philadelphia ahead 5-4

after Teixeira tied it with his second homer. Pratt hit another RBI

single to make it 8-4 in the fifth.

Burrell's run-scoring double in the sixth capped the Phillies'

scoring.

Burrell finally appears to have regained his stroke this year

after two subpar seasons. He's hitting .321 with 12 homers and 51

RBI.

A breakout season in 2002 in which he hit .282 with 37 homers

and 116 RBI earned Burrell a $50 million, six-year contract.

But he followed that with an awful year, batting just .209 with

21 homers. He hit .257 with 24 homers last season.

"Pat's been hitting the ball good since spring training,"

Manuel said. "He's been very consistent. He's having a big year."

Dellucci led off the game with his 10th homer, hitting an 0-2

pitch over the wall in left-center field. After Young walked,

Teixeira lined an opposite-field shot into the left-field seats for

a 3-0 lead.

"The last two days I wasn't swinging very well," Teixeira

said. "Tonight I got some good swings."Game notes
