SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners have re-signed oft-injured outfielder Franklin Gutierrez for the 2014 season, adding needed depth to their outfield.
In addition, the Mariners agreed to a one-year, $750,000 deal with left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush, avoiding a potential dispute over arbitration eligibility.
Gutierrez, who passed his physical Wednesday, became a free agent on Nov. 1 when the Mariners declined his option for 2014. He chose to return to Seattle for a sixth season hoping he can finally stay healthy.
Gutierrez won a Gold Glove in 2010 but has spent most of the past three seasons on the disabled list. He missed 106 games last season with hamstring problems that led to two extended stints on the DL.
If healthy, Gutierrez could solve one of Seattle's big concerns going into season about who will play in center field. The Mariners appear to have options at the corner outfield spots with the recent moves to acquire Logan Morrison and Corey Hart.
Furbush, 27, appeared in a team-best 71 games last season. He was 2-6 with a 3.74 ERA and a .199 opponent batting average. The left-hander tied for 10th in the AL in appearances and 13th with 20 holds.
Furbush has spent parts of three seasons with Seattle. He was acquired in a trade with Detroit in July 2011.
Seattle designated right-handed pitcher Chance Ruffin for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Gutierrez.
