The Miami Marlins have removed Steve Cishek as the closer and will "mix and match" at the end of games until they can determine a more permanent option, manager Mike Redmond said Tuesday.
Cishek, who leads the majors with four blown saves after faltering in back-to-back games Sunday and Monday, has a 10.32 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings spanning 13 appearances this season. He has just three saves after totaling 73 over the previous two seasons.
"They're going to have someone else step in and use me in the earlier innings, just to get myself back on track," Cishek told reporters.
"I don't know how to explain it. I feel fine out there. I'm just not getting away with any mistakes, first of all. Second of all, I'm making too many mistakes."
Redmond said the team will "mix and match" by using a combination of A.J. Ramos, Bryan Morris and Mike Dunn to close for now.
"Some of it may depend on what we have got to use to get to that spot," Redmond said. "We're not going to say one guy's going to do it. We're going to have to rely on everybody down there."
Multiple media reports also indicate that the Marlins have interest in free-agent closer Rafael Soriano, who was 4-1 with a 3.19 ERA and 32 saves for Washington last season.
In other injury news, RHP Henderson Alvarez (right shoulder and elbow inflammation) pitched six scoreless innings in a rehab game with Class A Jupiter. He has been on the 15-day disabled list since April 13.
