Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Matt Garza, who suffered a strained muscle in his back during his final exhibition game, will miss at least 4-6 weeks, Garza confirmed Tuesday.
Manager Craig Counsell told reporters that the 4-6 week timetable is just for Garza to return to the mound.
"Just a little different soreness that I wasn't used to, but I was changing some stuff [mechanically], so I equated it to that," Garza said, according to MLB.com. "I guess it wasn't, and right now it [stinks]. But I've just got to get better and stronger and be here to support the guys. Just do whatever I can."
Right-handed pitcher Tyler Cravy was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Tuesday to replace Garza, whose DL stint is retroactive to Saturday.
Garza was 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in six starts in spring training. He left Friday's exhibition game in the fourth inning with what was then described as right shoulder tightness.
He was looking to rebound from his worst season since his rookie year with Minnesota in 2006 after going 6-14 with a 5.63 ERA in 25 starts last season.
"I think Matt had a good spring. He had put himself in a good place to bounce back from 2015, so it's disappointing for him," Counsell said. "But it's four to six weeks, hopefully. Around the first week of May or second week of May, we'll have him back."
