TORONTO -- Red Sox slugger David Ortiz is day-to-day with a sore left foot that kept him out of the lineup in Boston's 5-3 extra-inning win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.
While X-rays on the foot were negative, Red Sox manager John Farrell was concerned enough that he didn't use his star hitter despite many pinch-hitting opportunities in the 11-inning victory.
In the fifth inning of Saturday's game in Toronto, Ortiz struck out swinging on a pitch that hit him on the top of his left foot. A visibly pained Ortiz slowly walked off the field accompanied by a trainer, though he remained in the game. In his next two at-bats, Ortiz popped out and hit a ninth-inning solo homer that temporarily put the Red Sox ahead in the eventual 10-9 loss.
It wasn't until well after the game that the soreness intensified.
"That's how it usually works. You cool off, that's when you start really feeling it," Ortiz said. "After the game I was fine, but then last night at dinner, I was sitting down for about an hour [and] I needed help to get up."
Ortiz said he was feeling better after a day of rest and treatment. He hopes to play Monday when the Red Sox begin a four-game series in Baltimore.
Ortiz's late scratch on Sunday led to a lineup shuffle, with Travis Shaw -- initially slated to hit seventh and play third base -- moving to first base and batting cleanup. Josh Rutledge took Shaw's place as the third baseman and No. 7 hitter, while Hanley Ramirez was shifted from first base to designated hitter, Ortiz's customary role.
Ortiz has had a long history of foot issues over the course of his career, and he has cited recurring foot pain as one of the prime reasons he is retiring after the season despite his still-dangerous bat.
