Gerrit Cole was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right triceps Tuesday, leaving the slumping Pittsburgh Pirates without their ace.
Cole had already been deemed unlikely to make his next start before his DL stint was announced.
Cole left Friday's game in the third inning after giving up a leadoff single to the Cardinals' Matt Carpenter. The injury is to his throwing arm.
"If we can knock this out in 15 days, we might be better served to knock this out in 15 days," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
Touted prospect Jameson Taillon was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis to take Cole's spot in the rotation. Taillon made his second major league start Tuesday night against the New York Mets, taking a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. The Pirates won 4-0 to snap their five-game losing streak.
Pittsburgh is 33-31 and trails the Central Division-leading Chicago Cubs by 11 games. Cole is 5-4 with a 2.77 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 68â…“ innings.
