Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr revealed that he would "probably have to take a little bit of a back seat during camp" after two offseason procedures on his back.
Kerr underwent surgery on a herniated disk on July 28, six weeks after the Warriors won the NBA title, but he needed another procedure Sept. 4 to address issues that arose after the first surgery.
As he recovers, Kerr will lean on his assistants, including Luke Walton and Jarron Collins. Alvin Gentry left to become the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.
"We have a great staff. They'll do a lot of the work," Kerr said at the Warriors' practice facility in Oakland, California.
"I'm coming along, but I've had some complications," he said.
Those complications caused Kerr to spend much of his offseason "on [my] back," unable to exercise.
When asked about his summer, Kerr said, "Well, to be honest, the last couple months have stunk for me. I'm not kidding. I've had a rough go physically this summer. Two back surgeries, and it has not been fun. It wasn't the summer I was envisioning after winning the title, thinking, 'This is the greatest thing ever.'"
Asked if the health would cause Kerr to miss road trips, he said, "No, I don't think so."
