For the past few decades, the Devils have been a relatively consistent contender. Not so in the early years. After forgettable stints as the Kansas City Scouts and Colorado Rockies, the New Jersey Devils took the ice for the first time in the 1982-83 season. They'd lose 49 games that campaign, which was still better than their 17-56-7 showing in '83-84, which includes losses in 20 of their first 22 games.
