News: 6 days agoHead coach Lindy Ruff indicated Wednesday that he wants to begin training camp with Thompson working as the Sabres' No. 1 center, Matthew Fairburn of The Athletic reports.
Spin: Thompson has spent time on the wing and in the middle, but the Sabres seem interested in seeing how the lineup would fare with him centering the top line. Thompson made a career-high 81 regular-season appearances last year. He racked up 40 goals, 41 assists, 85 hits, 48 blocked shots and 35 PIM while averaging 19:15 of ice time per game. Regardless of where he lines up in 2026-27, the 28-year-old should continue to have plenty of opportunities to contribute.
ESPN Fantasy Projection: Thompson made a career-high 81 appearances for Buffalo last season, averaging exactly a point-per-game while finishing with 40-plus goals (40) for the third time in four years. His 272 shots on goal were eighth-most in the NHL, while his 24 power-play points were Thompson's most since the 2022-23 campaign. He added 15 points in 13 games during the Sabres' playoff run. With things looking up in Buffalo from a team standpoint, Thompson should be able to finish with a plus-rating next season, which has really been the only negative regarding his profile from a fantasy standpoint. He's a rock-solid early-round selection in all formats.
