ESPN Fantasy Projection: By all accounts, Schaefer, the No. 1 pick in the 2025 draft, wasn't a lock to make the Islanders roster out of training camp. Not only did he make the team, he put forth one of the best first-year performances in NHL history. Schaefer's 23 goals tied him with Hall of Famer Brian Leetch as the all-time NHL rookie defensemen goal leader. He ended up playing in all 82 games, posting 59 points (including 18 with the man advantage), 222 shots on goal, and a plus-13 rating. Schaefer unanimously won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year. Simply put, the physical gifts here are off the charts. Schaefer should be a no-doubt No. 1 fantasy defender in all formats for the next decade-plus.
