Arizona State University said it is reviewing the circumstances around a hockey team outdoor workout in which Matthew Mayich collapsed.
The St. Louis Blues prospect suffered a possible cardiac event, according to the Arizona Republic, which first reported the player's identity and potential medical condition.
The university said in a statement that it can not provide additional information due to privacy laws.
Mayich remains hospitalized six days after collapsing during the outdoor workout last Thursday, according to multiple sources.
The Blues, who picked Mayich in the sixth round of the NHL draft in 2023, said the organization is being updated through his agent about the defenseman's condition. Mayich never signed an entry-level contract with the team.
"The entire Blues organization is keeping Matthew Mayich close to our hearts as we pray for his comfort and recovery while he continues to undergo medical treatment in Arizona," the Blues' statement said. "His agent has kept us informed about Matthew's medical status over the last week and we extend our deepest support to his family, friends and teammates during this difficult time."
Tempe Fire Medical Rescue was dispatched to the school's track and field facility at approximately 8:30 a.m. in response to a heat-related incident. Temperatures had reached 90 degrees during the morning, with a high afternoon temperature reaching 104, according to the National Weather Service.
Mayich, a Canada native, transferred to Arizona State for the 2026-27 season and most recently played for Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York.
