The NRL rarely stands still.
Between training sessions, media appearances, and behind-the-scenes conversations, new storylines often begin to emerge before the weekend arrives.
Throughout the week, ESPN will be gathering notes, insights, and updates from around the competition heading into the NRL's semifinal week.
Bulldogs move early to lock down rising forward
The Bulldogs have moved early to lock down rising forward Alekolasimi 'AJ' Jones, with the club's Rookie of the Year agreeing to a two-year contract extension.
ESPN understands Jones, who was already contracted through the 2027 season, has agreed to a new deal that will keep him at Belmore beyond his existing contract.
The move ensures Jones' future is secured before he would have been free to negotiate with rival clubs for 2028 from November 1.
Kennedy backs Hynes amid criticism
Will Kennedy believes Nicho Hynes has grown from the criticism that has followed him throughout his career, praising the Sharks star ahead of their semi-final against the Roosters.
"He's learned a lot from all the criticism he gets and he's taken a step forward," Kennedy said. "For me, I just want to get around him because he's my brother and I want to play next to him."
Trindall 'really good' after shoulder scare
Will Kennedy says Braydon Trindall has pulled up well after battling through a shoulder issue in Cronulla's finals win over North Queensland.
Kennedy said Trindall had been "really dialled in on the mental side" of his game and indicated the halfback had told him he was feeling "really good" ahead of the Roosters clash.
Mulitalo relishing 'Marky Mark' rematch
Ronaldo Mulitalo is embracing another blockbuster battle with Roosters star Mark Nawaqanitawase, describing the departing winger as a "generational talent".
Mulitalo said Nawaqanitawase "brings the best out of me" and revealed their on-field rivalry is largely one-sided when it comes to the verbal exchanges.
"He's a gentleman out there... he doesn't really say anything. I think it's more myself," Mulitalo joked. "He knows I'm just going to keep talking, so he just ignores me anyway."
Mulitalo determined to honour departing Sharks
Ronaldo Mulitalo says Cronulla's finals run carries added significance with several longtime teammates set to leave the club at season's end.
Mulitalo said he has played alongside some of the departing Sharks since he was 16 and wants to "honour those boys" with his performance against the Roosters.
"I don't want to let them down and disappoint them, winning the game is the most important part of the week for me."
Katoa reveals Cowboys appeal
Sione Katoa has revealed North Queensland's attacking style was a major attraction behind his move to the Cowboys in 2027.
After helping eliminate his future club from the finals, Katoa told ESPN he "loves the style of footy" they play, describing it as "free footy" and similar to Cronulla's attack.
Katoa emotional over Sharks farewell
He also admitted the reality that every game could be his last for Cronulla is beginning to sink in.
"Tonight might have been the last week, maybe the last game," he told ESPN after scoring a double against North Queensland.
"I'm very happy right now that I get another week with my brothers and play again."
Cleary racing clock for preliminary final
Nathan Cleary is in doubt for Penrith's preliminary final after scans revealed an stress-related bone issue in his foot.
The Panthers will assess and monitor their star halfback over the next fortnight, with their week off providing valuable recovery time.
Cleary has, however, been cleared of any suspension concern after receiving only a Grade 1 Dangerous Contact charge for his incident with Hugo Savala.
