Coulter Mackesy scored a game-high three goals to lead the Boston Cannons to a 9-7 victory over the Maryland Whipsnakes in a PLL quarterfinal matchup Saturday at TCO Stadium in Minneapolis.
Brian Kelly added two goals for the Cannons. Mikey Weisshaar contributed a goal and an assist, while Ethan Rall, Jack Regnery and Connor Kirst each scored once. JC Higginbotham made 12 saves.
Matt Brandau and Adam Poitras had two goals apiece for the Whipsnakes. Rob Pannell, the all-time points leader in outdoor pro lacrosse, and Aidan Carroll each chipped in a goal and an assist. Christian Mazur scored Maryland's first goal of the game. Emmet Carroll finished with nine saves.
Maryland jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but Boston answered with four consecutive goals in the opening quarter, including two from Mackesy. The Cannons extended their advantage to 9-4 by the end of the third quarter. The Whipsnakes mounted a comeback attempt in the final period, shutting out the Cannons and scoring three unanswered goals to pull within two. However, Boston's defense held firm in the final minutes to secure the playoff victory.
