Commentary
Despite the initial promise and emotion of this meeting, it's not really been one for the history books. A relatively tame United have struggled to push above an xG of 0.16, while City have had a worse stint in front of Senne Lammens' goal with an xG of just 0.09. Despite facing Maresca's 10 men for the majority of that first half, United have now failed to score in the first half of their last seven Premier League matches against Manchester City at Old Trafford. In a way, they'll be glad that the likes of Erling Haaland have been limited, yet at the other end, a reshuffle at the break could help regain some attacking focus, especially with the imposing Benjamin Sesko waiting in the wings. At the time of writing, the Opta Supercomputer gives United a 53.9% chance of victory. A draw comes in at 29%, while a City victory arrives at the least likely 17.1%.
Half-time rolls around at Old Trafford as this latest Manchester derby sees both United and City locked together in a goalless bout at the break. It's admittedly been something of a non-descript match so far, with tentative football punctuated by two major flashpoints. The first saw Phil Foden floored by Bruno Fernandes on the far touchline. Feeling as though he was kicked when down, the City man lashed out with two feet, sending the sly Portuguese down, holding his midriff unpunished. While the sky-blue number 47 took the bait in this act of gamesmanship, United failed to take the offensive impetus until the 45th minute. Following an Enzo Fernandez foul on Youri Tielemans, Marcus Rashford stepped up and curled a nicely shaped free-kick past Gianluigi Donnarumma and onto the left post.
HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 MANCHESTER CITY
Amidst a Fernandez penalty appeal falling on deaf ears, a minimum of two additional minutes are signalled.
RASHFORD! United's number nine curls a beautiful effort on goal from the 25-yard free-kick, and it beats Donnarumma all ends up but cannons off the outside of the left post! Close!
Fernandes tries to find Cunha from the left with a ball to the edge of the area. The stretching Brazilian misses it, but United will get another chance as Fernandez crunches Tielemans in a decent free-kick area just left of centre.
