Commentary
England are through to the World Cup quarter-finals, as the Mexicans wave goodbye to their own tournament! Despite playing the final 36 minutes – plus stoppage time – with 10 men, the Three Lions held on to condemn their hosts to a rare defeat at their fortress. Where on earth do we start?! Well, it seems a long time ago now, but Jude Bellingham's quickfire brace put England 2-0 up in the 38th minute. Although, Julian Quinones' well-taken volley four minutes later reduced Mexico's deficit at the break. Thomas Tuchel's side, who had an xG of 1.55 compared to their opponents' 1.94, were reduced to 10 men in the 54th minute when, following a VAR review, Jarell Quansah was shown a straight red card for what was deemed a dangerous challenge on Jesus Gallardo. However, they restored their two-goal buffer on the hour mark, with Harry Kane scoring from the penalty spot after Raul Rangel brought down Anthony Gordon. Mexico pulled one back with a penalty of their own, with Kane penalised after a VAR review, and Raul Jimenez slotting home from 12 yards. It was then backs-to-the-wall for the Three Lions, as they continually repelled their opponents' long spells of pressure. The equaliser never came, though, for El Tri, with tears streaming down their players' faces as their wait to reach a first World Cup quarter-final since 1986 continues. England, meanwhile, bury the ghost and banish their demons of their last visit to this stadium in 1986, when THAT Diego Maradona handball controversially sent them crashing out. They're now going to Miami on Saturday for a quarter-final clash with Erling Haaland's Norway, who stunned five-time champions Brazil earlier today. Thanks for joining us. We hope you've enjoyed it as much as we have! Until next time, goodbye!
FULL-TIME: MEXICO 2-3 ENGLAND
WHISKERS WIDE! With one of the final throws of the Mexico dice, another cross ricochets in the box. However, Stones makes a well-timed sliding intervention, clearing the ball just the wrong side of the post. The goalkeeper's making his way forward. It's now or never for the co-hosts, or they'll be leaving their own party...
Another Mexico corner ricochets off Spence and loops towards goal, but Pickford gathers in his six-yard box. England have just over a minute to hang on...

Substitute Henderson is deemed to be interfering as England prepare to restart from the throw. The midfielder is booked without even stepping on the pitch.

Vasquez, believing Mexico should have been awarded a throw rather than their opponents, vents his frustration towards the assistant. The referee books him for his troubles.
