Argentina v Iceland
Argentina wins as Messi scores in cameo in front of 88k in Alabama
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni gave the huge partisan crowd at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama, what it wanted: Lionel Messi.
The Argentine legend, who is working his way back from muscle fatigue ahead of the start of the FIFA World Cup, came on in the 70th minute and scored from the penalty spot right afterward in his team's 3-0 win over Iceland.
It was Messi's 911th career goal for club and country and 117th goal for Argentina and made him the oldest scorer in the country's soccer history. And it was likely a welcome sight for the fans in the stands and around the world as Scaloni's side prepares to defend its World Cup win in 2022.
The Inter Miami CF captain reported to the Argentina national team last week camp after suffering from muscle fatigue in his left hamstring. He exited Inter Miami's final game against the Philadelphia Union ahead of MLS' World Cup break in the 73rd minute due to discomfort, before the team confirmed the muscle fatigue.
The initial prognosis indicated his progress would be determined day-to-day. Scaloni previously said that Messi began partly training with the rest of the squad last Fiday.
"We're going to distribute the minutes of the players who will play tomorrow to try to avoid any mishaps," Scaloni said before the game.
Ezequiel Barco opened the scoring in the first half and Thiago Almada scored Argentina's third after the Messi penalty for a second friendly win in a row ahead of the team's World Cup opener against Algeria on June 16.
Messi did not play in Argentina's friendly win over Honduras on Saturday.
