Antoine Griezmann sets up Atlético winner on final home appearance

Antoine Griezmann set up the only goal against Girona before bidding an emotional farewell to the Atlético Madrid home crowd.

On his 500th appearance for the club, and his last at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, Griezmann set up Ademola Lookman's 21st-minute winner.

Jan Oblak made several fine saves, including from Claudio Echeverri late on, to ensure three points which took his side level with Villarreal and needing a draw in next week's season-ending meeting to secure third place.

Girona's Bryan Gil sent two early efforts just wide before Griezmann took centre stage.

The France international was denied an opener by Paulo Gazzaniga, with Dávid Hancko heading the resulting corner against a post.

Griezmann soon created the opener as he found space cleverly and zipped in a low cross for Lookman to tap in.

Lookman later shot wide and had a goal disallowed for offside while Griezmann was brilliantly thwarted again by Gazzaniga.

Oblak denied Álex Moreno and Viktor Tsygankov before half-time but Atleti were still threatening too as defender Marc Pubill fired just over and Koke's shot wide had Gazzaniga scrambling.

Lookman had an effort blocked early in the second half and Gazzaniga saved superbly from Álex Baena, while Tsygankov tested Oblak's reflexes.

Griezmann whistled an effort just wide, as did substitute Alexander Sorloth, before Oblak repelled Echeverri to preserve the points for the home side.

The crowd of 64,396 were then treated to an extended send-off for Griezmann, who was given a guard of honour back on to the pitch for a tearful interview and presentation in the centre circle along with a video montage of his highlights in red and white.
