Sergio Agüero has undergone successful surgery after suffering a torn left Achilles tendon while captaining Argentinian side Independiente during an over-35 Senior League Cup on Monday.
The Premier League legend started in a 2-0 win over River Plate but had to be carried away by players from both teams after sustaining an ankle injury.
Independiente's senior team confirmed via social media that the surgery had gone well, stating: "Sergio 'Kun' Agüero has successfully undergone surgery for his ruptured Achilles tendon, Get well soon @kunaguero. We're waiting for you."
Agüero, who retired from football in 2021 at age 33 due to a heart condition while on the books of Barcelona, posted a photograph from his hospital bed giving a thumbs up while writing: "Done. All perfect."
The former Manchester City star has played sporadically for Independiente's over-35 team since 2025.
He had scored in their opening game of 2026, a 4-1 win over Riestra.
Agüero's son, Benjamin Agüero Maradona, posted an emotional message wishing his father a speedy recovery.
"Life has always thrown obstacles your way, and you've managed to overcome them with wisdom and humility," he wrote. "I know you'll come out on top because I know you, and I know just how determined and resilient you are. I love you with all my heart, and I'll always be your number one fan."
Agüero began his career at Independiente before signing with Atlético Madrid in 2006.
The former Argentina international joined City in 2011 and won 15 trophies in England, including five league titles.
He left the club as City's record goal scorer with 260 goals in 390 appearances.
