Defender Savy King will join the U23 United States women's national team next week, marking her first international call-up at any level since recovering from a cardiac event that took place in May 2025.
King collapsed on the field during an NWSL match while playing for Angel City FC on May 9, 2025, and was taken to a nearby hospital in Los Angeles, where doctors discovered a rare congenital heart condition. King underwent open-heart surgery in the days that followed.
King began rehabilitation in summer 2025 and returned to the field for Angel City for the first time on March 15, 2026, in the team's 2026 season-opener. She has played in 13 matches for Angel City this season after missing four months due to a foot injury.
King is part of the 24-player roster for the U23 USWNT that will assemble at the U.S. Soccer National Training Center outside Atlanta next week. The U.S. Soccer Federation and senior USWNT head coach Emma Hayes treat the U23 team as the stepping stone to the senior national team.
King has long been tabbed as a future USWNT defender. She played for the United States at the 2022 U17 World Cup and at the 2024 U20 World Cup.
The USWNT U23s will play a pair of matches against the Dominican Republic U23s while in Atlanta: Oct. 9 at 5:30 p.m. ET and Oct. 13 at 12 p.m. ET. U23 USWNT head coach Heather Dyche's entire roster consists of NWSL players, including eight players with senior team caps.
Attacking midfielders Ally Sentnor and Jaedyn Shaw will both be with the U23s this camp despite regular recent appearances with the senior team. Hayes told reporters on Tuesday that playing with the U23s is part of their "prescribed journey" of development, and that she spoke with each player about that.
The U23s will train at fields adjacent to the senior team next week, allowing Hayes and her staff to evaluate the entire group. The U23 roster includes five "overage" players, which countries can agree to around specific friendly matches.
Goalkeeper Angelina Anderson and forwards Jameese Joseph and Mia Fishel, who have all trained or played with the senior USWNT, are overage players on the U23 roster, as is defender Kate Del Fava. Midfielder Gia Corley is also back in camp with the U23s. She first appeared with the U23 USWNT last year after spending five years with Germany's youth national teams.
Corley was born in Tacoma, Washington, and her family moved to Germany when she was a child, making her eligible for both teams.
