Diego Gómez added his name to a relatively short and exclusive list of Premier League players who have scored goals from near the halfway line on Sunday afternoon, after walloping one in from long range in Brighton & Hove Albion's 5-0 demolition of Crystal Palace.
After receiving the ball in the center circle, the Paraguay international midfielder turned, spotted Palace keeper Walter Benítez off his line and proceeded to unleash a monstrous shot that sailed in from 55.7 yards.

That is the furthest out a goal has been scored in the Premier League since Wayne Rooney's similarly outrageous effort (63.4 yards) for Everton against West Ham almost nine years ago.
Alongside Rooney, Gómez now joins some big names in the rundown of Premier League long-rangers. But how does his extraordinary strike against Palace stack up against the other raft of goals that have been scored around the halfway line?
14. Tim Howard (Everton) vs. Bolton Wanderers, 2012
The first of three goal-scoring keepers on the list, Howard successfully harnessed the power of the wind to score from inside his own area for Everton. While the distance was impressive, the goal loses several aesthetic points for being a freak, weather-assisted goal that bounced several times before hitting the back of the net.
13. Paul Robinson (Tottenham Hotspur) vs. Watford, 2007
Demonstrating his renowned set-piece mastery, Robinson scored for Spurs with a direct free kick from around 95 yards out when his aimless punt up field bounced high over the head of England rival Ben Foster and into the Watford goal.
12. Asmir Begović (Stoke City) vs. Southampton, 2013
The longest-distance goal in Premier League history (101 yards) was scored by Begovic from inside his own penalty area with just 13 seconds of the game elapsed. The feat is certainly noteworthy but the Bosnian was hugely assisted by a strong prevailing wind, a fortunate bounce, and the fact that his Saints counterpart, Artur Boruc, appeared to be playing in roller skates.
11. Xabi Alonso (Liverpool) vs. Newcastle United, 2006
After managing to evade an interfering referee, Alonso slung a speculative shot towards the Newcastle goal from the center circle that only really ended up in the back of the net thanks to the fact that goalkeeper Steve Harper's legs turned to jelly while trying to recover his position. Ingenious, but fairly low on style.
10. Stiliyan Petrov (Aston Villa) vs. Derby County, 2008
Villa thrashed Derby 6-0 in what would prove to the latter club's Premier League annus horribilis (during which the Rams accrued a record low total of just 11 points) with Petrov capping off the routine rout with a marvellously struck long-distance goal from the edge of the center circle.
9. Jonjo Shelvey (Swansea) vs. Aston Villa, 2014
After bringing down an undercooked defensive clearance, Shelvey quickly assessed his options and chose to simply send the ball back from whence it came with an excellent long-range effort from the middle of the pitch.
8. Luis Suárez (Liverpool) vs. Norwich City, 2012
Suárez made a habit of terrorizing Norwich during his Liverpool days, but his longest-range goal against the Canaries came in 2012 when the Uruguay striker completed his hat trick from roughly 45 yards out.
7. Charlie Adam (Stoke City) vs. Chelsea, 2015
After the Stoke defense had quickly wrestled possession back from Chelsea, Adam was able to look up and launch a shot from midway inside his own half. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was able to get a flailing hand to the Scotland midfielder's effort, but couldn't prevent it from crossing the line.
6. Moises Caicedo (Chelsea) vs Bournemouth, 2024
Scored on the final day of the 2023-24 season, Caicedo left it late to file his own entry for the Premier League goal of the season award with a 50-yard piledriver scored from the center spot. Unfortunately for the Chelsea midfielder, the actual award ended up going to Alejandro Garnacho for his overhead kick against Everton.
5. Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) vs West Ham, 2014
Unusual in that it came from a bouncing ball, Rooney first demonstrated his ultra long-range prowess in 2014 when he dropped a spontaneous arching shot over bamboozled Hammers keeper Adrian from 45-plus yards out.
4. Maynor Figueroa (Wigan) vs Stoke, 2009
Reacting quickly to a free kick being given in his own half, Wigan full back Figueroa pounced on the opportunity to crack a 65-yard set piece soaring over the head of Stoke goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen in one fluid motion.
3. Wayne Rooney (Everton) vs West Ham, 2017
A formidable and deceptively difficult first-time strike from Rooney that saw the ball sail with a perfect, flat trajectory over the head of stranded Hammers keeper Joe Hart, who had scurried out of his area to clear a loose ball.
2. Diego Gómez (Brighton) vs Crystal Palace, 2026
It might not be the longest Premier League goal on record, but Gómez's ludicrous effort against Palace certainly ranks up there among the most technically adept. A beautifully flat, purposeful trajectory that rustled the net without bouncing. Bueno.
1. David Beckham (Manchester United) vs Wimbledon, 1996
The long-range Premier League strike by which all others are measured (literally, in some cases), Beckham's classic looping effort from the halfway line was famously achieved despite wearing someone else's boots on the very first day of the 1996-97 season and has since become the archetype of the genre.
