St. Louis City goalkeeper Roman Bürki was taken to the hospital after taking a knock to the head in a collision during his team's U.S. Open Cup final win over the Columbus Crew on Wednesday night.
In an attempt to make a save in the 70th minute, Bürki took a knee to the head from Crew winger Anass Zaroury. He remained on the ground to receive medical attention before being stretchered off the field.
Bürki was able to wave to supporters as he was taken away from the pitch. St. Louis confirmed to ESPN that Bürki was conscious and moving all extremities on his way to the hospital.
The score was tied 0-0 at the time of the injury, but St. Louis went on to win the game in a shootout after Burki's backup Ben Lundt made a save to help his team beat the Crew 5-3 on spot kicks.
The win earned St. Louis, which began play in MLS in 2023, its first trophy in club history.
St. Louis City captain Bürki had 43 touches and three crucial saves before the injury. He played an integral role in maintaining the 0-0 draw before being replaced by Lundt after the head injury.
Bürki, who joined St. Louis from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, stopped a corner kick from Brais Méndez that appeared to be goalbound and a flurry of other shots just before sustaining his injury.
Eleven minutes of injury time was added due to Bürki's injury, but neither team scored before the end of regulation despite Columbus outshooting St. Louis 16-3, so the game went to extra time and penalties.
